Volume 1, No. 1

Dear Friends of the Alliance,

Happy New Year! It's here! Welcome to the long-awaited newsletter of the
Alliance for the Separation of School and State.

Many people use this time of year to make a resolution. Those who haven't done so may feel as if they're too late.

But when it comes to educational freedom, your decision to get involved can never come too late. In the words of Senior Writer Tammy Drennan (The Future of Education is Now - below), "Today, we have the power to take back our children."

And it's true. Though reclaiming our children from government control is seldom easy, it is certainly an attainable goal--and a critical one.

Do you want to see a good reason why it's critical? Bruce Shortt takes a look at what's going on in Mississippi (News - below). His scathing contrast shows the difference between independence and government control. In this small story is the kernel of what we stand for: Independence and freedom are as fantastically hopeful, as control by the government is hopeless.

So, if you've already made a new year's resolution, please make another. And if you haven't, make a resolution today. Resolve--firmly--that from now on, you will take concrete action to promote educational alternatives.

If you have children in public school, resolve that you'll explore all your options until you find the best approach for educating them.

If you are a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, or a neighbor or friend or leader, resolve that you'll share your time, talent, and knowledge to support the families in your life who may be struggling to leave the government school system.

And if your family is an independent schooling success story, resolve to reach out to parents who are frustrated, confused, angry and feeling trapped, like the parents of the tormented children in I Like This Feeling below. You are the lifeblood of our movement. Your real-life experience can make the difference in a child's future.

Know that the Alliance is behind you all the way. We're here to provide the analysis and resources you need to make the right decisions for your family and the families you care about.

Let's work together to make 2007 a year filled with hope for educational freedom.

Thanks,

The Future of Education is Now

by Tammy Drennan

The future is ours for the taking.

Today we have the power to take back our children.

Today we have the option of choosing freedom from state-controlled schooling.

Today we have the choice to raise our children as our own and not as intellectual and social wards of the state.

Today, right now, we have the resources, the talent, and the liberty to create affordable and excellent education options to meet the needs of all children.

We need only act. [Read more]

I Like This Feeling

by Tammy Drennan

For twenty years I've been fielding calls from desperate parents of public schooled children. Back in the early days the complaints were bad enough -- children spending seven hours a day in school and learning nothing, merciless taunting by classmates and officials who wouldn't do a thing about it, cutting remarks by teachers.

Today's scene is scarier and more heartbreaking.

Let me tell you a few of the stories I've heard over the past couple of years. I'd rather not have to relate these stories. When I write I try to express myself in ways that most parents would feel comfortable allowing their teens to read. I can't do that this time. Some truths can't be wrapped in comfortable euphemisms.
