The Road to Freedom - #3

Is there anything good about public schools?

Yes.  There are many good, caring teachers, administrators and personnel, as well as thousands of parent and community volunteers.

But...

When good people are working in a bad system, the system wins." - Marshall Fritz, Alliance founder

Some of the best people in America become teachers.  We're saying that the system itself is bad and that these good people are ultimately fighting a losing battle. They are to be admired for their hard work and commitment to children, but if we want true excellence in education, the best thing we can do is find ways to free the good teachers to really teach. As it is now, many of them feel trapped by their lack of options.

There is a sizeable remnant of wonderful teachers and administrators... who struggle daily with the strange and toxic places government schools have become. - Bruce N. Shortt, The Harsh Truth about Public Schools

I wanted to treat the students as I would have treated my own children, but I couldn't... I want freedom for everybody and I want them to experience the freedom that I found. [State-run education] is antithetical to our nation's founding principles. The Berlin Wall of the Establishment is cracking; more people want out of it every day. The people are becoming too well acquainted with the arrogance of the people in charge. - Rachel Lloyd of Bowling Green, Ohio, former public school teacher, homeschooler (in an interview with Eric Morrison of Seattle, WA)

You have to see it to believe the mess... it's really hard to explain to someone who's not there in the trenches every day.  Public education as we know it has outlived its usefulness. It's just not working. - Leona Na'lla Ali, 26-year veteran public school teacher

Although teachers do care and do work very hard, the institution is psychopathic - it has no conscience. - John Taylor Gatto, 1991 NY State Teacher of the Year, three-time NYC Teacher of the Year

We could fill pages with quotes from frustrated teachers.  A huge percentage of these teachers leave the system each year -- usually for other careers. But increasingly, they're leaving to pursue creative teaching options in the private sector. We'll talk about that later, but for now it's important to know that it's not only parents who are frustrated and searching for alternatives.
