Thoughts from the World Congress of Families

by Alan Schaeffer, President

Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science

The Congress was held in the Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science, the largest enclosed space in the country holding 3,600 people.

Palace of Culture and Science

The Palace of Culture and Science was a "gift" to the Polish people from communist Russia's Joseph Stalin, who ruled Poland with an iron fist after World War II.

No one I spoke with liked the palace and they even considered tearing it down.  They decided not to offend their Russian neighbors.

There are 550 statues ensconced around the wedding-cake architecture of this hideous palace.

Almost all the statues are tributes to the worker or the communist elite - in a so-called ideal society without elites.

Note Marx, Engels and Lenin amazingly still survive on this statue.

It's rather ironic that where the Communist Party once held its congresses, the Polish people now hold many creative and freedom-oriented events.

And rather than tear down the palace, it seems that Poland’s answer is to hide it by building bigger buildings around it.

An impression from Europe.
